The Cairngorms offer outdoor enthusiasts a wealth of hiking opportunities, with trails winding through stunning moorlands, ancient forests, and rolling hills. Whether you’re seeking a challenging climb with panoramic views or a gentle stroll through scenic glens, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Here are some of our favourite routes to explore:
- Dorback Drove Roads Loop: Not for the faint-hearted, this challenging 24 km (14.9-mile) loop near Nethy Bridge takes an average of 6 hours and 25 minutes to complete. The trail features a variety of terrains and is popular among hikers looking for a rigorous trek.
- Nethy Bridge–Castle Roy Ramble: An easy woodland and riverside walk leading to the ruins of Castle Roy, with beautiful views of the Cairngorm Mountains.
- Ben Rinnes: For those seeking a more demanding hike, Ben Rinnes rises to 841 meters and offers panoramic views of Moray and Aberdeenshire from its summit. The trail is well-marked and rewards climbers with expansive vistas.
- Big Pines / Two Lochs Trail: A 5 km (3.1-mile) trail showcasing some of the area’s most impressive pine trees and picturesque loch views.
Before setting out, it’s advisable to check current trail conditions and access permissions, as some routes may cross private lands or be subject to seasonal restrictions. Equipping yourself with appropriate gear and informing someone of your plans will help ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.

The Strathspey area, where Dorback is situated, offers a taste of the Highlands, with cozy pubs, charming cafés, and traditional Scottish food to enjoy after a day of exploring. Here are a few of our favourites in the nearby village of Nethy Bridge, just a 10-minute drive away:
- Nethy House Cafe: This cosy cafe offers a range of homemade soups, sandwiches, light lunches, and great cakes, along with barista coffee from Glen Lyon Roastery and a selection of teas and soft drinks.
- Mountview Hotel Restaurant: Located in the heart of Cairngorms National Park, the Mountview Hotel enjoys glorious views over Nethy Bridge and the surrounding area. The hotel restaurant has been known for great food and superb personal hospitality for many years, and this tradition continues to flourish today.
- Mobile Fresh Fish Van: Every Wednesday at 10 am, a local fisherman sells fresh fish outside the post office.
- Balliefurth Farm Shop: A long-established butcher’s in Nethy Bridge dating back to 1948, now expanded into a delightful farm shop. They sell a selection of meats such as beef, lamb, pork, poultry, venison, and game - all raised on Balliefurth Farm. The shop also offers fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy produce, eggs, honey and preserves, pasta, sauces and spreads, frozen ready meals, chocolate, and gluten-free foods. They also deliver orders directly to your door free of charge.
